In Ellis's weak third Joe Plantagenet Mystery (after 2009's Playing with Bones), the titular detective inspector investigates the macabre events surrounding an allegedly cursed old house in his North Yorkshire hometown of Eborby. Just as new DNA evidence surfaces linking local MP Barrington Jenks to two missing teenage girls (last seen 12 years before in the woods behind the house), one of the students now living there, Petulia Ferribie, is murdered. Joe and his superior, Det. Chief Insp. Emily Thwaite, discover that the building's bloody legacy goes back to the 19th century, when its owner killed his entire family, and is being revived in the 21st by Petulia's killer in a series of murders that symbolically obliterate the five senses. The ostensible protagonist makes little impression amid a large cast of characters, while the convoluted story line fails to convince. (Aug.)
