Overview

V.I.'s battleaxe Aunt Rosa is under investigation by the FBI and SEC after counterfeit stock certificates were found at St. Albert's Priory, where she serves as treasurer. As malicious as her aunt is, V.I. knows she's not dishonest, so V.I. vows to protect her from taking the fall. But V.I. starts questioning the strength of her family ties when a menacing voice on the phone threatens to throw acid into her eyes if she doesn't butt out. The stakes are high as she begins to sniff out a connection between Chicago's most powerful institutions: the Church and the Mob.

MAY 2011 - AudioFile

Based on the third book (1985) in the V.I Warshawski mystery series, this dramatization was broadcast on BBC Radio. It features first-class acting, subdued sound effects, and a jazz musical background. Kathleen Turner reprises her 1991 movie role as Chicago P.I. Warshawski as she tracks down a murderer and investigates a conspiracy involving the Mafia and the Vatican. Turner’s smoky voice could not be more appropriate for the role, and the secondary characters are just as good. An intriguing aspect is the dialogues Warshawski carries on in her mind with her deceased mother. Even this tricky challenge is well done. D.R.W. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine
