Description: This book contains information necessary to complete research in the field of occupational therapy. This book is an expansion of the previous edition which was published in 2017.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to provide an introductory overview of research in the field of occupational therapy utilizing occupational therapy examples throughout.
Audience: The primary audience for this book is occupational therapy students, although it could also be a resource to practitioners considering how to complete certain research endeavors. Overall, the book meets the needs of students in accredited occupational therapy programs by providing the knowledge needed to begin a practice-based inquiry. The editor of the book is a well-respected scientist in the field of occupational therapy and the contributing authors reflect a diverse set of career stages with the majority being well-established investigators in the field of occupational therapy.
Features: The book begins with an overview of the need for research, types of research, and chapters that delve into evidence-based practice and critical article appraisal. The second section addresses the steps of the research process that occur before data collection including covering considerations for ethics in research. The third and fourth sections address qualitative and quantitative data analysis respectively. The fifth section covers specific applications of research such as surveys, needs assessment, single-case design, and participator action research. The final section addresses dissemination and mixed methods. Each chapter contains learning objectives as well as multiple-choice and open-ended questions to check reading comprehension with a provided answer key. Each chapter also features an activity for additional student engagement at the end. The book in places does provide tables as a helpful summary of key information in many chapters as well as visuals that provide a clear picture of the topics covered, for example, data analysis using qualitative software. While this book has an immense amount of valuable information, the organization of the different chapters and the content in each could be enhanced to decrease overlap allowing for more examples of the different elements to be included. Similarly, like items could be placed more closely together. One example of this is that survey content is in the fifth section but information about descriptive studies like surveys is also covered in Section 4. In addition, while there are separate sections for qualitative and quantitative inquiry there is often an overlap in the presentation of content across these sections that may be difficult for entry-level students to follow.
Assessment: This book is a valuable text for educators in occupational therapy who are looking for a resource to provide an overview of research concepts. This recent edition expanded some of the coverage of qualitative content and added a chapter on writing a grant proposal that will be useful in an occupational therapy curriculum. In comparison to other books that focus on research for rehabilitation professionals like Foundations of Clinical Research: Applications to Evidence-Based Practice, 4th Edition, Portney (F.A. Davis, 2020) there is content that is distinct as more information about qualitative inquiry is present in this book. However, the organization and depth of coverage of research designs in the Portney text are greater. Nevertheless, this book does cover topics that are relevant to occupational therapy that are not pulled out specifically as chapters in the Portney book, such as the use of needs assessment and community participatory research.
