This book presents a wealth of images of the different diseases and conditions encountered in the field of uroradiology with the aim of enabling the reader to recognize lesions, to interpret them appropriately and to make correct diagnoses. For each depicted case, important imaging features are highlighted and key points identified in brief accompanying descriptions. Readers will find that the book provides excellent guidance in the selection of imaging modalities and facilitates diagnosis. Description: This is a comprehensive, case-based atlas of uroradiology that may be useful as a reference when reviewing genitourinary-related imaging and as a case-based preparation book for image-based board examinations.
Purpose: Although the author does not indicate the intended purpose, it is clear that the objective is to share the imaging appearance of various common and uncommon pathological entities affecting the kidneys, urinary tract, and reproductive system.
Audience: This might be useful to have in an abdominal imaging reading room, where it could serve as a quick reference for identify an imaging diagnosis when interpreting unfamiliar or uncommon abnormalities related to the genitourinary system. It does not provide detailed discussions of the various pathologies, and is not intended for in-depth teaching.
Features: The book includes cases illustrating a large spectrum of normal variations and pathology in the genitourinary system. It is divided into 12 chapters based upon anatomic location or disease category. The kidney is covered extensively, with cases demonstrating congenital, vascular, obstructive, infectious/inflammatory, and neoplastic pathology. Other sections cover the adrenal glands, prostate, scrotum, and female pelvis. Each entity includes a short description of the key diagnostic features and the main differential diagnosis. There are a limited number of references at the end of each chapter. The broad spectrum of pathology (especially for the kidney) and the clear and concise text are advantages in a quick reference. CT and MR imaging as well as angiography and plain films (including IVPs) are emphasized, with relatively fewer cases illustrating the use of ultrasound, and none with PET imaging. All the images are black and white; there are no illustrations of either color Doppler or spectral Doppler imaging. The lack of an index of pathological entities is a major shortcoming in this type of reference.
Assessment: This book offers a quick reference for common and uncommon pathology with CT and MR imaging of the genitourinary system, particularly within the urinary system and the male reproductive system. The paucity of ultrasound imaging and absence of Doppler imaging in a genitourinary book is a major limitation, as is the lack of an index for disease entities.
