Overview

David W. Coleman's K.C. at the Bat is a fun, new, 2,800-word rhyming poem in an entirely original setting, but inspired by the classic 19th-century American verse, Casey at the Bat. It is designed for parents to read aloud to their young children, for young children to read on their own, and (eventually) for young children to read aloud back to their parents!

K.C. at the Bat is a new story that follows the tradition of the original. It tells of a baseball game between teams representing two fictional neighboring towns, somewhere in a rural part of Texas. The two towns, Kettle City and Tarry Town, have been slugging it out against each other for baseball supremacy for more than fifty years!

K.C. at the Bat projects the magic of the "Casey at the Bat" format over a full, nine-inning baseball game. It's a lively and entertaining account of diamond action in the familiar iambic pentameter form. Conceived and written as a work that can be shared and enjoyed by both children and adults, K.C. at the Bat features a vocabulary that has not been limited for an assumedly juvenile audience. As such, it can be used to broaden and expand the word power – and thus, the knowledge – of any beginning reader, whether a child or an adult.

I am a writer based in the Phoenix metropolitan area, where I live with my wife, three children, and three cats. My love of sports has been a lifelong affair. I began sports writing professionally while I was still in high school. In addition to boxing, I am also a fan of football, baseball, and basketball. I am a recent (2009) graduate of Axia College of the University of Phoenix. In my spare time, I read, write, sing, play with my children, and explore the musics of Soul, Rhythm & Blues, and Funk, which were such an essential part of my foundation as a child, and have remained a passion of irreplaceable scope in my life.
