Inmitten des historischen Rahmens von Katharina Howard, fünfte Ehefrau von Heinrich VIII. von England und ihrer Hinrichtung am 13. Februar 1542 erfand Dumas einen fiktiven Lord Ethelword, Herzog von Dierham, der diesem Roman prägt. Von der historischen Wahrheit allerdings weit entfernt. Der Roman wurde in Fortsetzungen von der Zeitschrift "Der Erzähler. Ein Unterhaltungsblatt für Jedermann" 1844 veröffentlicht. Die Übersetzung durch Ludwig von Alvensleben wurde der heutigen Zeit angepasst und leicht verändert.
