Overview

What will you be when you grow up? It seems like a simple question. Kartini was just a girl who loved to learn. However, as a part of Javanese nobility, she was expected to follow the traditions of her culture - which did not allow most girls to get an education. Yet, she did not allow the limitations to stop her! Using her voice, primarily through writing, Kartini made a lasting impact for women in her culture - and around the world.

About the Author

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy is an independent school located in Suffolk, Virginia. This book was a collaboration between Lower School Teachers Katie Glass, Emily Mistr, Beth Miller, and Lisa Shaw, along with the Second and Third Grade Students. Inspired by Katie Glass' time teaching abroad in Indonesia, this book was a culminating project for the students in their Global Connections Class. Working together with our school librarians and art teacher, students researched, organized, and illustrated. We are thankful to all who contributed their time and energy!
