Overview

Indian philosophical thought has centred around various themes including

epistemological, metaphysical, linguistic, ethical and ontological concerns.

Discussions on knowledge and its sources, nature and existence of God, ethical

values, causation, liberation, reality, and creation can easily be found. The

doctrine of karma has also been an integral feature of classical Indian thought.

But as far as the problem of freedom of the agent is concerned as well as the

conception of agent's relation to the theory of karma, one does not find a

comprehensive and detailed discussion done. Often scholars have raised their

concerns with regard to this problem but to the best of my knowledge no

constructive elaborate studies have been produced. At the most fragmented

discussions pertaining to this problem do exist. It may have been felt by

scholars that the classical period in Indian philosophy was majorly concerned

with the ways in which a person could transcend the cycle of birth and death to

attain eternal bliss or realise God and so much could be found on 'freedom

from' and not so much on 'freedom to'.
