Overview

As the smoke clears from the Trinity War, one thing looks disturbingly clear, the members of the Justice League of America are dead, betrayed by one of their own.  
But as with the Trinity War, all is not what it seems.  Martian Manhunter and Star Girl have lived to fight another day and find themselves trapped on an alien world that is under the control of a group of super-villains.  The key to their survival may lie in the hands of the super-villain Despero, but will these heros be able to find it within themselves to trust soemone who is supposed to be their mortal enemy?

This volume collects issues #8-14.

Kudos to writer Kindt and a fine crew of illustrators for fearlessly making the second arc of the Justice League's post—“New 52” series (collected here) dark and desperate, in which all of the league's heavy hitters are trapped in sentient mental prisons, allowing all manner of villains to run amok. Only Martian Manhunter and Stargirl are left to save the day. Readers may be befuddled as to whether they can, or did, or even could have accomplished the task. This volume has its merits, but since it is part of the Forever Evil crossover event, it will only make complete sense to readers familiar with that context, and the frequent instances of flashback and flash-forward get wearisome. The prerequisite mayhem is secondary to the revealing, sensitive reintroductions the story line provides for its two leads. Scenes of standard comic-book action and violence are suitable for most readers; includes a cover gallery.
Verdict For courageously bringing DC's finest to the edge of despair, without stooping to nihilism and with only two underused heroes standing between them and the brink, Survivors of Evil is recommended to all superhero fans keeping up with the post—“New 52” DC Universe.—J.
