It takes a lot of guts to be a war journalist, and this offering from the Beyond the Battlefield series (4 titles) profiles six groundbreaking war correspondents. Subjects include two women—Marguerite Higgins, a white American, during WWII, and white, French-born Catherine Leroy during Vietnam—as well as Sha Fei from China (the 1937 Sino-Japanese War); Vincent Ottley, an African American civil rights activist and reporter (WWII); and the well-known Hungarian American Robert Capa, (also WWII). Short chapters concentrate on wartime activities, featuring simple sentences, embedded vocabulary definitions, and archival photos, often the journalists' original work. The text also provides sufficient context so that readers understand why these individuals and their contributions were so important. No source notes or bibliography, but the engaging stories and checks for understanding make this a good choice for newly independent readers. — Kathleen McBroom, Booklist

Gr 4–9—The books in this series highlight groups and individuals whose contributions during wartime have only recently been publicized. Many of those featured are women, people of color, or noncombatants. Choctaw Code Talkers, the Soviet Night Witches, and daring journalists are a few of those introduced. Sidebars include discussions of how groups such as Black or Native American soldiers were treated at home. Each book includes a "Memory Game" that asks readers to recall what was covered on the page where each image in the game appeared. A guide to before- and during-reading activities appears in each book, including an introduction to key vocabulary words. There are also a few after-reading questions and a suggested activity to direct readers back to the text for further thinking. VERDICT This series offers unique perspectives beyond the usual wartime battle coverage.
