This book avails the knowledge of how denervation can relieve joint pain available to the many groups of physicians who care for this problem. Each chapter is devoted to a joint and reviews the neural anatomy as it relates to the clinical examination of the patient. Chapters are user friendly and provide details on the indicated nerve blocks and the clinical results of partial joint denervation. Description: The book is dedicated to procedures aimed at interrupting the sensory nerves from the joints. Joint denervation is presented as a pain-relieving and function-improving surgery serving as an alternative to other surgical interventions.
Purpose: The purpose is to present a comprehensive overview of current approaches to joint denervation, a procedure that is currently underused. This is an interesting concept that has been around for over a century but has never gotten universal acceptance. The book covers the subject very well and provides illustrated examples of intervention in upper and lower extremities, as well as in the temporomandibular joint.
Audience: The author feels that this book would be of interest to neurosurgeons and plastic, hand, orthopedic, foot and ankle, and oral/maxillofacial surgeons. It is conceivable that surgical specialists will take notice of this approach and integrate it into their practice. Most likely, this material also will be of interest to myriad pain specialists who will then adapt it to nonsurgical interventional alternatives to operative procedures.
Features: The book focuses on a step-by-step description of joint denervation surgery. Technical nuances are provided in detail for each major joint in the extremities and face. Abundant color illustrations, both clinical and cadaveric, facilitate understanding and make it easier to learn surgical techniques and interventional targets.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent summary of an entire surgical field that has not been widely accepted. The author's desire "to educate the world of physicians caring for patients with chronic joint pain to know that this pain is ultimately transmitted, if not derived, from a peripheral nerve" reflects the book's purpose. The real question is whether the intended audience will be receptive.
