Overview

Joey has been preparing for his first hunt for months. The early morning hunt initially showed no signs of a deer, but just when Joey and his mom consider leaving, a deer appears. Joey must make an ethical decision on whether the deer is old enough to be harvested. Warden Caldwell checks Joey after the hunt and they discuss making tough choices that make you a better hunter.

About the Author

Joann Garza-Mayberry grew up in San Antonio, Texas and is a graduate of Texas State University and the University of the Incarnate Word. She has had a successful career as a Texas Game Warden stationed in Caldwell County since 2004. Joann enjoys community outreach and has written children’s books that share important lessons from some of her own youth interactions, as a Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officer.
Joann has appeared on multiple episodes of the Animal Planet Series, “Lone Star Law.” You can hear her speak about her career as a game warden on Season 2 of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Podcast, “Under the Texas Sky.” When she is not working, Joann enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband Mark and their children, Job and Vida.
