Jinx Of The Blue Cat
In 2212, Earth is a malignancy known as the Afterlife. Fewer than 300,000 humans survive, most imprisoned in group life-support systems known as city-states, a necklace of tiny technological marvels gleaming in a toxic wasteland.
Mother Nature as bountiful and nurturing companion no longer exists except in netdreams--an exquisite virtual reality. There is only one cost for entering the nirvana of netdreams: surrender to the hive mind of digisense. Each year, thousands eagerly trade life in the devolution to obtain their own virtual heaven. It is an arrangement that has made Lord Xavier the most powerful man on the planet, and his city-state the richest.
As with all the city-states, Phoenix depends on recycling materials mined from the Afterlife by taints. Fiercely independent, taints consider life inside the technopolises, and especially digisense, a form of mental castration. They prefer the hardscrabble Afterlife where they have the freedom to live their own arcane dreams, illuminated by recurrent legends of the Blue Cat. No one is sure what the Blue Cat is, but to its most avid pursuer, that doesn't matter. All Jinx needs to know is that the Blue Cat is worth enough coin to get her off the planet.
Her quest quickly puts her on the radar of Lord Xavier who dispatches his terrifying guardians to find her. Capture means decantation, an agonizing virtual interrogation, followed by a lifetime of digisense. Jinx's only chance of surviving intact is to find the Blue Cat so she can leave the Afterlife, and Lord Xavier, far behind.
Traveling with a colorful band of friends, foes and strangers, Jinx chases the Blue Cat through the netdream-soaked citizens of Phoenix, the metalmorphosists of Diaspora, the godlets of Genesiac, the starship builders of Auriga, and finally the strange traders of a hidden city-state known as Elysian.
Plunging in and out of reality, Jinx of the Blue Cat is a wild ride through a dystopian future where technology keeps humans alive, and virtual reality redefines sanity.
