When Paul d'Aspremont travels to Naples to join Alicia Ward, his beautiful fiancé, he is surprised to see her grow pale under his gaze, and to discover that an Italian suitor, Count Altavilla, is trying to win her affections. Soon the strange gestures and whispers of the locals convince him—against his better judgement—that indeed he has the evil eye, and that he must resort to extreme measures if he wants to shield Alicia from its deadly effects.

A precursor of Modernism, this novella describes a world of deadly gazes and consumptive pallors rendered in the most bizarre, hallucinatory style.

About the Author

Andrew Brown is a leading religious journalist and an editorial board member, leader-writer and feature writer for the Guardian. He also writes frequently for the BBC, Spectator and The Oldie. Andrew is the winner of the Orwell Prize for Political Writing, the Templeton European Prize for Religious Journalism and was shortlisted for the Aventis Prize for Science writing for his book In the Beginning was the Worm. He has been Press columnist for the Church Times since 1996.

Andrew Brown KC is a solicitor and defence counsel. He has prosecuted multiple trials in the High Court and has acted as lead counsel before the Supreme Court both for the crown and the defence. He has worked as crown council on a number of high profile cases including the Clutha helicopter crash and the Jim Clark Rallies fatal accident inquiry.
