Overview

Jake's Abdication tells the story of Jake and Paula Greene depicting their struggles in setting up a new business venture catering to tourist. Jake is a charter Captain of a small boat moored at Big Pine Key in Florida. Jake is drop dead handsome, fit as a fiddle and ready for love. Paula is a little overweight and works for a Miami based commercial real estate firm. She is bright, energetic and has a good sense for business.

The story outlines the trials and tribulations of starting up their new business taking affluent guests for overnight stays on an uninhabited island in the Florida Keys. The new venture is quite successful until a fateful trip with four young students from Smith College aboard.

The book chronicles the faltering relationship between Paula and Jake resulting from stresses placed upon them when they become island bound. The psyche and mindset of affluent most Smith College students are juxtapose to one local woman who is at Smith on a fully paid scholarship. The differences are striking and real to behold.

Tensions and conflicts abound in this idyllic setting as drama intermingles with passion, wealth and social upheaval. The story is compelling and well written. The book will quickly become a page-turner for even the most casual of readers.

About The Author

I thought that it might be appropriate to tell you a little bit about myself. I was raised along with my two brothers in the small Mill River village of Leeds, Massachusetts. My father repaired oil burners back then and my mom worked in a local factory. They were awesome parents and were great role models for my two brothers and me as we grew up.

Life was extremely good being brought up in the 1950’s. As a country we had emerged from World War II as a super power and life was somehow simpler then. Television came to our small valley and opened up a whole new world for us. We loved Ozzie and Harriet and were enthralled by Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color.

Late into my teens and fresh out of high school, I worked in a plant then managed by my Dad. We produced ice cream and dairy products. It wasn’t long before I met Jill, my rock of ages and lifelong partner. We married and I moved to Westfield where I became a firefighter, eventually being promoted to Chief of the Department. I spent 35 wonderful years on the Department and I have always considered it a privilege to have served with such great people through all those years. We have two awesome kids and a granddaughter that we enjoy immensely. Retirement has provided me with an opportunity to enjoy Jill and the kids more than ever. Simple walks with Jill, a bike ride down Pecos Road when I’m in Phoenix with Mike or playing an adventure game with Julie on the computer all help to make life pretty special these days.
