Her childhood friend, now a doctor living in San Francisco, saves her from a life of shame by rescuing and marrying her. Narrator Chloe Campbell’s clear voice and dramatic reading convey the tense moments in this romance. Though Campbell achieves strong differentiation between the characters—which is impressive given the large number of men—sometimes it’s difficult to recognize the narrative voice. Further, Campbell occasionally slips into a distractingly childlike voice for Jewel, but, for the most part, her portrayal of Jewel’s inquisitive and innocent nature is consistent.
