CHAPTER 1

While sleeping on planet Earth, Jacob is in a dream. He meets Dr. Sara Solar, a phenomenal astronaut. Dr. Solar invites Jacob to travel into space with her. While in space, Dr. Solar introduces Jacob to some facts about the eight planets in the solar system and the shapes that represent each planet. The first planet Jacob travels with Dr. Solar to see is Mercury.

In Jacob's dream, Dr. Solar talks to Jacob about Mercury.

Hi Jacob! Mercury is the star shape of the solar system. It's the smallest planet, and is closest to the sun. It shines brightly, similar to a star, and can be seen from Earth early in the morning or late at night. The night temperature on Mercury can drop to -280 degrees Fahrenheit, and during the day it can rise to 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of its small size, Mercury travels the fastest around the sun taking generally 88 earth days.

The second planet Jacob travels to with Dr. Solar is Venus.

In Jacob's dream, Dr. Solar talks to Jacob about Venus.

Hi Jacob! Venus' size is similar to Earth. It is also known as the goddess of love and beauty in mythology. This is why it is the heart shape of the solar system. It's covered in thick clouds due to common volcanic eruptions and extremely hot temperatures. Venus is also known to be the brightest planet in the solar system. Venus' cloudy atmosphere traps the heat from the sun, creating temperatures that rise beyond 880 degrees Fahrenheit. It takes Venus about 225 earth days to orbit the sun, and it rotates in the opposite direction of Earth. Spacecrafts haven't been able to survive on Venus longer than two hours due to hot temperatures.

The third planet Jacob travels to with Dr. Solar is Mars.

In Jacob's dream, Dr. Solar talks to Jacob about Mars.

Hi Jacob! Mars has been found to have seasonal changes similar to Earth. It is also believed to have life forms, vegetation, and water. Mars is the trapezium shape because of its volcano, Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system. Olympus Mons is larger than Mount Everest. Mars is half the size of earth, and has two moons named Phobos and Deimos. It is believed that Mars had a flood 3.5 billion years ago. NASA's Phoenix landed on Mars and also found signs of snow falling from clouds.

The fourth planet Jacob travels to with Dr. Solar is Jupiter.

In Jacob's dream, Dr. Solar talks to Jacob about Jupiter.

Hi Jacob! Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system because of its distinctiveness; it is the diamond shape of the solar system. Jupiter is so large that earth can fit on Jupiter 1,000 times. Jupiter has many colorful clouds. The clouds are filled with unknown chemicals that make them change colors. The Great Red Spot is several clouds twisted together; it is twice the size of earth and has lived on Jupiter for over 300 years. There is no known solid surface on Jupiter. Similar to the sun, Jupiter is made up of hydrogen and helium. The temperature of Jupiter changes the form of the hydrogen to a liquid, which has created the largest ocean in the solar system. However, it is made of hydrogen instead of water. Jupiter is also known to have 53 moons.

The fifth planet Jacob travels to with Dr. Solar is Saturn.

In Jacob's dream, Dr. Solar talks to Jacob about Saturn.

Hi Jacob! Saturn is known to be the most distinct and the second largest in the solar system. It is the circle shape of the solar system because of its many moons. Saturn has 62 moons. It is also made of mostly hydrogen and helium like Jupiter. Saturn has rings that circle the planet. There are nine rings that circle Saturn, and they are mostly made of ice particles.
