Description: This is a cursory overview of common maladies that are thought to make the IVF process challenging. The 30 chapters cover various complications that range from the obvious - polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) — to the more subtle, but important — obesity and thrombosis.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide readers, generally infertility specialists, a superficial approach to IVF in these medically complicated patients. As fertility preservation is becoming more important in counseling folks with cancer and autoimmune disease, the relevance of this book is obvious.
Audience: The audience includes newly minted reproductive endocrinologists and infertility specialists, as well as trainees in these fields, who actively manage IVF patients.
Features: Among the topics the book covers are cystic fibrosis, obesity, endometriosis, fibroids, even international travel. The book covers topics in breadth, but not necessarily in depth, although it provides appropriate references for readers looking for more information. The section on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and thrombosis is helpful, particularly as it relates to the use of oral contraceptives in these patients when planning controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH). The use of tables and graphs is welcome and not too overwhelming.
Assessment: This second edition provides a very good overview of common medical complications in the IVF patient. Seasoned veterans of IVF may find this book superficial, but trainees and junior reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialists will find this book a good supplement to their clinical practice.
