Overview

This score to one of the last great 1960s epic comedies is a lighthearted effort by composer Ernest Gold, who chose to impart a circus-band atmosphere to the music. Unfortunately, this is the sort of thing that can work very badly against a film of this type -- the music often seems as though it's attempting to be funnier than the film itself (in the case of It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World it's a fact that the music is often a lot funnier than the events onscreen). The music is fun to listen to, however, and with the programmability of most CD players, the dialogue excerpts can be evaded, as can the interview at the end of the disc. The disc is a fine example of remastering, with noise reduced to a minimum, and a great dynamic range. MGM has had a well-deserved reputation for treating their music library well, unlike many studios (United Artists, not always part of MGM, managed to lose a large portion of its music masters over the years, with record keeping so poor that no one even knows where the tapes might have been sent) and it shows in the sound here. The disc also has a CD-ROM portion with the film's trailer. ~ Steven McDonald
