It Happened After This...
Leaving a 1 year marriage with a dime in my pocket, I started hitch-hiking south from Washington State. I had no idea where I was going or what I was to do as I landed in southern California.
I met a guy on the on-ramp who was going to New York. I had never been to New York, so I joined him. After a brutal snowstorm from Texas through Oklahoma we ended up in the quaint little town of Topeka Kansas. Everyone was smiling. We went into a Christian bookstore to ask if there was somewhere to bed for the night and get a meal. The owner got us in his car and drove us across the tracks to a little mission.
I had never been in a mission before and didn’t know you listened to a preacher and then got a meal. As the preacher spoke something happened to me. He told a story that I had never heard before. At the end, he asked if anyone wanted to meet this man he called Jesus, my hand went up in the air.
He came back and we went into a little room and he prayed for me. That night I felt something happening deep within my gut, a peaceful experience. The preacher returned the next day and took me under his wing. That day we went somewhere in the country and I buried my “past life” as he said, “As far as the east is from the west, that’s how far I’ve removed your sins from you.” I looked one way and then the other (in Kansas you can see forever) noting they never met. My life has not been the same.
