About the Author

Philip E. DeVol has been training and consulting on poverty issues since 1997. He is co-author of Bridges Out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities (1999) with Ruby K. Payne and Terie Dreussi Smith, and in 2004 he wrote Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin-By World: Building Your Resources for a Better Life to help people in poverty investigate the impact of poverty on their communities and themselves. DeVols 2010 work Investigations for Economic Class in America, co-authored with Karla M. Krodel, applies the Getting Ahead concepts to college life for under-resourced postsecondary students. A collection of DeVols essays and articles also was published in 2010 under the title Bridges to Sustainable Communities.

DeVol works nationwide and internationally with communities that apply Bridges constructs, including sites in Canada, Australia, and Slovakia. In fact, Bridges Out of Poverty and Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin-By World have been translated into Slovak, and Bridges Communities in Slovakia have so far been awarded two European Union grants to further the work there. Bridges Communities bring together people from all classes, political persuasions, and sectors to address all causes of poverty in a systemic way. DeVol conducts quarterly phone conferences with Bridges Communities on a variety of topics to assist knowledge transfer among the many individuals, organizations, and communities that are adopting Bridges principles in their settings and developing new levels of expertise.

Karla M. Krodel is adjunct faculty in the Department of Social Work at Youngstown (Ohio) State University (YSU), teaching Investigations into Economic Class in America to first-generation, low-income college students. She was an early adopter of Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin-By World for college students and continues to apply Bridges Out of Poverty concepts in the development of model learning communities for under-resourced college students.

Krodel co-authored Understanding and Engaging Under-Resourced College Students in 2009 with Bethanie Tucker and Karen Becker. In 2010 Philip DeVol and Krodel co-authored the student textbook Investigations into Economic Class in America and the companion volume of Facilitator Notes. This curriculum was expressly designed to transform the educational experience of first-generation, low-income college students.
