This series is directed to healthcare professionals who are leading the tra- formation of healthcare by using information and knowledge. Launched in 1998 as Computers in Health Care, the series offers a broad range of - tles: some addressed to specific professions such as nursing, medicine, and health administration; others to special areas of practice such as trauma and radiology. Still other books in the series focus on interdisciplinary issues, such as the computer-based patient record, electronic health records, and networked healthcare systems. Description: This book focuses on nursing informatics in the 21st century, and is organized around a framework called "CARE," which stands for connected health, administration, research, and education. An associated website offers some audio of the authors talking about the content and has outlines for the chapters. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The authors indicate the purpose is to provide "a primer for nurses searching for basic information on the topic of nursing informatics." They note that nursing informatics is an essential part of the profession that helps to expand nursing knowledge and theory development. For an informatics book, it is essential to provide the information online and in print. I was not able to access all the chapters online, however. The audio links will add interest for students. The book meets its purpose, although it is more than a primer.
Audience: The intended audience is practicing nurses and undergraduate student nurses. However, for undergraduate nurses, this information would need to be integrated into a curriculum and spread across a number of courses. For practicing nurses, particularly those who have been out of school for a number of years and are interested in the topic, it would be very informative.
Features: The book covers the history and mechanics of computing, health informatics standards, ways to use large data for administrative and research purposes, and includes a short section on how nursing informatics needs to be incorporated into the nursing educational process. There is extensive discussion of the research potential of large data, including data security and privacy. Information on the mechanics and informatics standards is interesting but may go into more depth than student nurses would find useful. For generalist nurses, a greater focus on the actual uses of informatics in the clinical setting would be helpful. This book is also available, separately for an additional fee, in an online version, which suits the subject better than the print format, which is not as easy to follow. I did not have access to the online version, but assume it would be more engaging and the flow would look better.
Assessment: This is a very complete overview of health informatics from both a Canadian and a U.S. perspective. This would be an excellent resource for nurses interested in informatics and could be used by nursing faculty as a supplement to other courses or as a standalone informatics course. Another informatics book I am familiar with, Health Informatics: A Systems Perspective, Brown et al. (Health Administration Press, 2013), is focused on health informatics from a more general perspective, not just nursing, but seems to provide more relevant day-to-day material, such as how electronic health records are selected and a systems perspective of how they are used.
