About the Author

Gary Elkins, Ph.D., ABPP, ABPH is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Baylor University, and Director of the Mind-Body Medicine Research Laboratory, where he leads a team of doctoral and post-doctoral researchers focusing on hypnosis and mind-body interventions. Dr. Elkins is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He has over 100 publications in the areas of hypnosis and mind-body medicine, which includes the Handbook of Medical and Psychological Hypnosis: Foundations, Applications, and Professional Issues; and Mindful Hypnotherapy: The Basics for Clinical Practice. He has served on numerous NIH scientific review groups. In recognition of his research, he has received major awards: the Society of Behavioral Medicine (2012, Complementary and Integrative Medicine Investigator Research Award), and the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis (2008 Morton Prince Award for Professional Achievement to Psychological Hypnosis, and the 2022 Distinguished Contributions to Scientific Hypnosis from the American Psychological Association-Division 30 Society for Psychological Hypnosis. He is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) and the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis (ABPH). He is a Past-President of the Society for Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis; and the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis as well as co-author of the landmark publication, Standards of Training in Clinical Hypnosis. In addition to a tenured Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Baylor University, he is an Adjunct Professor at Texas A&M University College of Medicine, and a Medical Associate with Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest Medical Center. His research has been continually funded by the National Institutes of Health for over 20 years with funding exceeding $10 million for clinical hypnosis research. Dr. Elkins is an internationally recognized speaker on hypnosis on topics such as clinical hypnosis, mindful hypnotherapy, hypnosis research, smoking cessation, women’s health and hypnosis, sleep, and posttraumatic growth. and is a consultant to the Boulder Crest Foundation.
