The book can also be used for undergraduate and graduate courses on addictive behaviors. Dennis L. Thombs, a professor at the University of North Texas in Fort Worth, is past president of the American Academy of Health Behavior. Cynthia J. Osborn is professor at Kent State University.
Features: The book describes the characteristics of a good theory: it explains observations, is coherent, is understandable, is explicit, is simple, is comprehensive, generates predictions, and is not contradicted by other evidence. The authors note that addiction can be seen as immoral conduct, disease, or maladaptive behavior and note that the disease model removes morality and shifts resources toward rehabilitation rather than punishment. The U.S. government has spent much more money on law enforcement than on prevention/treatment. They note the significant comorbidity between substance use and psychiatric disorders and discuss how psychoanalytic theory helps illuminate etiology. The use of a behavioral techniques such as contingency contracting has shown to be effective with substance use. Cognitive-behavioral theory is helpful for understanding substance use and giving clients practical intervention techniques. Systems theory includes family disease models, family systems models, and behavioral models. A sociocultural perspective emphasizes the importance of values in society. Mindfulness-based interventions have become more popular in the past two decades. The authors believe that more resources should be directed toward developing evidence-based practices. The chapters are organized fairly uniformly, with chapter summaries and review questions. The book is very readable and contains numerous tables and figures which help clarify the text.
