This book examines colonial disintegration within the British, French, Dutch, Belgian, Italian, and Portuguese empires after WWII. It covers both high level politics and the interplay between domestic and foreign policy, economics, and the reactions of colonial nationalists to the process of colonial withdrawal. Specific papers examine British policy in Indochina in relation to the beginning of the Vietnam War, and the Anglo-French withdrawal from Syria and Lebanon.
