The artificial intelligence (AI) community might not have reached the goal of an intelligent machine its optimists predicted, but they have expanded their field outward as evidenced in these 70 essays by 60 contributors from industry, government, and academia. Volume one begins with a history of the quest for an intelligent machine: first in story, from Hephaestus's Talos who could heat himself hot as a coal to hug the enemies of Cretan beaches, to HAL, 2001's unctuous supercomputer; and then in practice, from the early 1800s chess automaton to contemporary uses of expert diagnostic systems applied to medicine, manufacturing, and business. Volume one's other contributions discuss developing and implementing intelligent systems. Volume two covers fuzzy systems, neural networks, and expert systems as applied to intelligent signal processing, robotic control, and the operation of telecommunications systems. Myriad other topics are displayed in the comprehensive table of contents provided in each volume—topics showing intelligent systems implemented through methods of case-based reasoning and induction, and frame-based and cognition-system techniques. Each article states the provenance of its author, provides an abstract, is extensively subsectioned, and ends with references.
