Tom Brzustowski, O.C., MSRC (1937-2020) était professeur RBC à l’École de gestion Telfer de l’Université d’Ottawa et président du conseil d’administration de l’Institute for Quantum Computing de l’Université de Waterloo. Il a siégé au sénat et au conseil des gouverneurs de l’Université de Waterloo et a présidé le comité consultatif scientifique du Conseil des académies canadiennes. Le professeur Brzustowski a été président du Conseil de recherches en sciences naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG) de 1995 à 2005. Ingénieur agréé en Ontario, M. Brzustowski a obtenu un B.Sc. en génie physique de l’Université de Toronto en 1958, puis une maîtrise (1960) et un doctorat en génie aéronautique (1963) de Princeton. Il a enseigné le génie mécanique pendant 25 ans et a également occupé pendant une douzaine d’années le poste de vice-président aux études de l’Université de Waterloo. Il est ensuite devenu sous-ministre du gouvernement de l’Ontario de 1987 à 1995, d’abord au ministère des Collèges et Universités, puis au Conseil du premier ministre. Dans le cadre de sa carrière universitaire, il a publié plus de 60 articles de recherche et des manuels de premier cycle sur la thermodynamique. Il est l’auteur de publications sur l’innovation et la prospérité au Canada, dont The Way Ahead: Meeting Canada’s Productivity Challenge et Innovation in Canada: Why We Need More and What We Must Do to Get It (Invenire). M. Brzustowski a reçu des doctorats honorifiques de plusieurs universités – Alberta, Concordia, Guelph, McMaster, Ottawa, Ryerson, Waterloo, École polytechnique de Montréal et Collège militaire royal du Canada. Il est officier de l’Ordre du Canada et membre de l’Académie canadienne du génie, de l’Institut canadien des ingénieurs et de la Société royale du Canada. En 2006, il a reçu la médaille d’or de l’Association des ingénieurs professionnels de l’Ontario pour ses « contributions importantes et durables à la recherche et au développement dans le domaine du génie canadien ».
Tom Brzustowski, O.C., FRSC (1937–2020) was the RBC Professor at the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa and Chair at the Board of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. He served on the University of Waterloo’s Senate and Board of Governors and chaired the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Council of Canadian Academies. Brzustowski was President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) from 1995–2005. A professional engineer in Ontario, Brzustowski graduated with a BASc in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto in 1958, and with a master’s degree (1960) and a PhD (1963) in Aeronautical Engineering from Princeton. He taught mechanical engineering for 25 years and served a dozen years as Vice-President, Academic, at the University of Waterloo. He then became Deputy Minister in the Government of Ontario (1987–1995), first in the Ministry of Colleges and Universities and later in the Premier’s Council. During his academic career he published more than 60 research papers and undergraduate textbooks on thermodynamics. He authored several publications on Canadian innovation and prosperity, including The Way Ahead: Meeting Canada’s Productivity Challengeand Innovation in Canada: Why We Need More and What We Must Do to Get It (Invenire). Brzustowski held honorary doctorates from many institutions, including Alberta, Concordia, Guelph, McMaster, Ottawa, Ryerson, Waterloo, the École polytechnique de Montréal, and the Royal Military College of Canada. He was an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada, and the Royal Society of Canada. In 2006 he received the Ontario Professional Engineering Association’s Gold Medal for making “significant and lasting contributions to research and development in Canadian engineering.”
