There is an often recited quote used in many martial arts programs
to foster the personal development of the students. It says, “Imagine
that every person in the world is your teacher, and think how smart
you would be if you learned from them. Surely everyone you meet
has something they could teach you.”
Along these lines, I feel like I have been blessed. I have had many
teachers from all over the world. Many were very high-achieving
athletes who dominated the sporting world for years.
Others were very philosophical martial artists and instructors, some
of the finest in the world. Some, like my self, were in a position to
coach athletes to greater success. A few were young people
that I helped to guide and mentor. Yet others were noted celebrities,
psychologists, accountants, salesmen, marketers, and even a few
canines. The purpose of this book is not to recount funny stories or
quirky people. It is not to self-glorify through association with the rich
or famous. Rather, the purpose of this book is to illustratethe blessing
that my teachers have been in my life. It is my hope that these stories
will help you recognize and receive those in yours.
