Infections of the Central Nervous System has become a classic in its field. This second edition will certainly maintain its well deserved reputation. Neurologists, neurosurgeons, and infectious disease subspecialists will probably want to have their own copies handy for ready access.

This is an up-to-date, comprehensive, 1000-page reference describing the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of a wide range of topics in infectious disease as they pertain to neurology. The book divides the chapters by organism and further subdivides each chapter in an organized, uniform manner. This second edition, coming five years after the first, is certainly due. Of all fields in medicine, infectious disease is probably one of the most dynamic in terms of research and development, and a book of this kind may well need revision at shorter frequencies than other disciplines. As boldly stated in the preface by the authors, this book was created ""to develop the gold standard reference text."" It is my opinion that they have lived up to their objective for a multitude of reasons. The authors targeted the book for the ""advanced reader."" I would have to classify this book as primarily aimed at the practitioner and upper-level resident. It is information laden and written at a depth that would not be of substantial benefit to the average medical student or beginning resident as his or her first exposure to these topics. The book contains a vast body of information, including illustrations and photographs in adequate quantity to effectively portray key elements of the subject. The references span a broad range of history, with a significant number being added since the first edition to validate current work. The index and table of contents are as to be expected from a text of this nature. The book's appearance has a quality look to it with the gray background, blue trim, and gold lettering. It is well written, comprehensive, and up-to-date. My only complaint concerns theproofreading, as there were frequent typographical errors in some areas. I find this book to be informative and an asset to my at-home library. I would recommend it to those seeking a reference text on the topic of neurologic infections.

A comprehensive reference text for the advanced reader on all aspects of CNS infections. The contributors combine clinical experience with active basic and/or clinical investigative interests in their topic and are drawn from the ranks of internal medicine, pediatrics, neurology, neurosurgery, infectious diseases, epidemiology, virology, neuroradiology, and the basic neurosicences. After a brief introduction that emphasizes the syndrome-oriented clinical approach to the patient with a CNS syndrome and fever, the book is divided into parts based on microorganisms. The major CNS pathogens (viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa) receive the most attention, although rarer pathogens such as mycoplasmas, slow viruses, and helminths are also covered in depth. The book concludes with discussions on two major diagnostic modalities: evaluation of the cerebrospinal fluid, and neurodiagnostic imaging by computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Description: This textbook, now in its third edition, is a detailed reference for the understanding of neurologic illnesses caused by infectious agents, microbiologic toxins, and autoimmune responses. In comparison with the previous edition, the format has not changed significantly but almost half the chapters are written by new authors or co-authors.
Purpose: The editors intend that this reference text be both broad in scope and deep in detail, covering pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and therapy of various CNS infections and related conditions. This goal is realized in a comprehensive and orderly manner.
Audience: The target audience includes infectious diseases specialists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons, as well as trainees in these fields. The authors are well-qualified to provide complete and up-to-date information to this audience.
Features: There is an initial section on the clinical appraisal of patients with CNS infections, including the physical findings, CSF evaluation, and CNS imaging. The format of the remainder of the book includes bacterial, toxin-mediated, spirochetal, fungal, protozoal, and immunologic disease entities. Neurosurgical and critical care management chapters are followed by a section on vaccine prophylaxis. Both color and black-and-white illustrations are generally clear, although the use of color for gross and microscopic brain autopsy illustrations would have added to their clarity. Tables are well organized and readable. References are extensive, cited appropriately in the text, and as recent, in some chapters, as 2003.
Assessment: The third edition of this text continues to be a valuable addition to the infectious diseases literature, providing more extensive and relevant diagnostic and therapeutic information than is present in general infectious diseases textbooks. Descriptions of ongoing and important advances in areas such as diagnostic procedures, effective newer antimicrobial agents, and ancillary therapy make this edition, seven years after the second, needed.
