Fixico (history, Arizona State Univ.) condenses his three-volume Treaties with American Indians into one volume. The essays, largely identical to those in the 2007 work, from a half-dozen contributors (identified by name only, without academic qualification or affiliation), begin with "A Native View" of treaty-making, then discuss these contracts as international agreements, followed by general historical coverage of treaties (including Canada/First Nations but not Alaska or Hawaii) in chronological order. Part 2 consists of 22 treaties, from 1778 to 1871, with brief commentaries by other (name-only) contributors. The editor's substantive introduction (essentially the same as the 2007 one) offers statistics and background. Although there are some black-and-white historical illustrations, the complete absence of relevant maps is regrettable. Despite considerable information online, only the essay on "Canadian Indian Treaties" includes websites in its further reading. There is no general bibliography, and only a single reference is post-2006. Some terms are explained in text boxes. The volume does not discuss issues such as gaming, child-custody rights and adoption, and reservation schools past and present, or current events such as the Dakota Access Pipeline protests. Important treaties (e.g., Hopewell, Greenville, Fort Laramie 1868) omitted from the original work have been added, while several general essays from those volumes have not been included here. VERDICT Those without access to the three-volume set will find this a concise and objective introduction to the history of treaties with Native Americans.—Patricia D.
