About the Author

David Dixon Porter (1813-1891) was an American naval officer, military historian, and novelist.  As a child, his father took Porter on as a midshipman—beginning a career that would involve serving in the Mexican War, commanding for the Union during the Civil War, and then working tirelessly to keep the navy above world standards.
