About the Author

Julian Davenport could’ve had a much different narrative. Young, black and no father in sight, Davenport shunned school and found his stride selling drugs. Not even a stint in state prison deterred him. Five years ago, facing a third potential jail term after a drug conviction in Harrisburg, Davenport came clean. He turned to poetry. Julian Davenport interacts with the student in his Writers Workshop at Marshall Elementary School in Harrisburg. In little more than a year, Davenport penned some 50 poems, all meditations on the hardships of life on the streets, jail and violence. His book, “In My Eyes,” resonates with a hip, urban diction and cadence. His poems are anchored to a resolve that the writer has the power to change his life. Davenport hopes to spread that message to others. “Everybody doesn’t grow up being good their whole life,” Davenport says. “I feel sometimes people are put in a position where they gotta keep hitting their head against the wall but when it’s time to turn around, they’re gonna do more good than they ever would’ve.”
