Calan Campbell, Laird of Kilcairn, just wanted a refreshing swim in the loch; he didn't expect to have his plaid stolen. After tackling the thief, he quickly realizes the thief is a lady who has been badly beaten. Calan hides her away in his home to protect her reputation until she heals. Allissaid MacFarlane just escaped her captors and finds herself in the arms of another strange man shortly afterwards. Unsure of where Calan's loyalties lie, she feigns amnesia. After spending more time with Calan, she realizes he's not in the same league with the man who kidnapped her, and his kindness makes her heart melt. But her captor will not give up so easily, and her life, as well as her entire family, may be in danger. Balancing out horrors Allissaid suffered during her capture, Sands manages to add moments of levity and humor, and readers will find yet another Highland couple to fall in love with. VERDICT Fans of historicals, especially those featuring kind and handsome Highlanders, will find a lot to love in this latest from Sands (Highland Wolf).—Amanda Toth
