In a Heartbeat
Julia has the perfect life—a happy marriage, a precocious son, and twin daughters on the way. She is forced to rethink her idea of perfection, however, when her daughters, born prematurely, face devastating health consequences and her marriage can't withstand the challenges of this new normal.

Gail has not allowed herself to get caught up in looking for perfection, having learned long ago no such thing exists. She creates a life that works for her and her son. Despite his autism, they can manage just fine. Or so she thinks.

Julia and Gail share little in common, but when their sons develop a unique friendship, the two women find their lives intertwined in ways they never thought possible. Together, they discover that facing their daunting challenges—divorce, illness, devastating loss—is made easier with a friend to help shoulder the burdens.

Spanning 20 years of trials, tribulations and triumphs, In a Heartbeat forces us to confront love, loss, and the bonds of friendship that carry us through our darkest moments.

About the Author

Karen Gibson is a retired professor who now dedicates her time to writing. She spent a couple decades teaching English and Speech Communication to middle and high school students before joining the faculty of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh as a member of the Educational Leadership and Policy Department.
Karen divides her time between Wisconsin and Arizona (for obvious reasons!) When she isn’t writing, she is cheering on the Wisconsin Badgers, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Green Bay Packers. She spends as much time as humanly possible with her favorite people—her grown children and her three granddaughters.
