Description: This book is designed to provide easy access to immunological information that the authors believe is currently difficult to find in one volume. They suggest that the book will be a convenient source of essential data. Most of the book consists of tables, lists, or figures rather than narrative.
Purpose: The authors suggest that often factual information relating to immunology is required but not easy to find. Thus they have put together lots of facts concerning different aspects of the discipline in one volume. For the individual laboratory, this wide range of facts might not be necessary, but as shared reference material it might be useful.
Audience: The book is written for anyone who is looking for specific facts relating to aspects of the immune system that might not be easily accessible. The authors are well known immunologists.
Features: The chapters follow the order that is generally found in a standard immunology textbook. Each chapter provides a level of detail that is less likely to be found in a textbook. There is little narrative. For example chapter 4, "The HLA Dictionary" consists primarily of tables of MHC genes and their alleles. This clearly would be useful in genetic studies. Another chapter focuses on cytokines and chemokines and attempts to provide any facts that might be required concerning their nomenclature, source, mode of action, etc. Whether any one laboratory needs the information in both these chapters or in the rest of the book is an interesting question. Some of the tables and figures will look quite familiar because they have been adapted from other well known sources. There is no color art in the book and, although references have been provided, their format is not consistent from chapter to chapter.
Assessment: All of the data in the book is useful but it's not likely to be useful to the same individual or laboratory group. It makes an interesting reference for the library. On the other hand, the information might not be too difficult to obtain online using a good search engine.
