About the Author

David Male is Professor of Biology in the Faculty of Science at the Open University. His research is focused on the mechanisms by which immune reactions and inflammation develop in the central nervous system and the use of nanocarriers to deliver therapeutic agents to the brain. He teaches courses in infectious disease, autoimmunity, molecular and cellular biology, and neuroimmunology.

Description: This small (and relatively inexpensive) book is both a dictionary of terms and a guide to the basic principles of immunology. It is meant to be used to prepare for exams or as a refresher when needed for other courses.
Purpose: The aim is to provide a review of basic immunological principles as well as dictionary of immunological terms. It is not meant to be a substitute for a traditional textbook used in conjunction with a course. It provides an efficient way to look up basic information.
Audience: Since the book can be used in multiple ways, it could be suitable for students who need a review when studying for exams or as a concise overview for those who have not taken an immunology course, but need it as a background for some other course. It also could be used as a dictionary.
Features: The book is divided into five sections that cover the major areas associated with immunology. There is little detail in this small book and those looking for more information will have to find another source. The author acknowledges this limitation. The book is well illustrated in color. The table of contents includes subheadings for each chapter. An excellent index (dictionary) makes it possible to locate specific terms. There are no suggestions for further information.
Assessment: This is a nice book describing immunology in more or less an outline format. It hits the highlights of the subject. The lengthy index serves as a dictionary, a feature not generally found in this sort of book, and is potentially useful to students who need their memory prompted. The content has been updated for this edition, which is necessary since immunology is a constantly evolving subject.
