Overview

I'm the Chicken Named Dinner
This is a true story of Dinner, a real Ameraucana chicken. Dinner is hanging out with her friends Weasley, a Maine coon cat, and Norman, a Rhodesian ridgeback dog. They all live on a farm.
The farm is located in Winter Garden, Florida, USA, and all three friends are cared for by their owners, Randy and Mary Ellen Cook (Nana and Pop-Pop) and Jordan, one of the couple's twelve grandchildren.
Dinner shares with Norman and Weasley the story of how she came to be on the farm and some of her experiences since being there. She was bullied and beaten up by the older chickens, lost a friend and a sister, and also had a very close encounter with a coyote. She feels very happy and privileged, is very grateful for the life she has, and greatly appreciates her two special friends. As of the publication of this book, all three friends are alive and still reside on the farm.
This book depicts a beautiful friendship, touches on the importance of not making fun of others, teaches children a brief lesson on how bad bullying is, and excellently exemplifies that it is possible to continue living and loving in spite of injuries, setbacks, or the loss of a loved one.

About the Author

As a teenager, Mary Ellen Cook was an active member of the Drill Team and the Sunny Brook Swim Team in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, USA. She also enjoyed dancing and spending time with her close friends.
In 1963, as a young married woman and mother of the first two of her three children: Tami, twenty-five months and Bruce, thirteen months old at that time, she badly injured her spine, resulting in her walking with one crutch for the next forty-three years. Her third child, Tara, was born thirteen years after that accident. In 2006, she fell and fractured her left hip. Five years later, in 2011, she had another fall, this time fracturing her right hip. These injuries have resulted in physical limitations for her spanning more than fifty years, with her becoming dependent on a motorized scooter since 2007. The accidents, however, have not stopped this wife, mother, and grandmother from having fun and enjoying life.
Mary Ellen Cook is now married to Randy Cook, whom she had known primarily as her brother’s friend since she was fifteen years old. It was not until 1980, however, that the couple started dating, then got married in 1986. For the first twenty-seven years of their time together since 1980, the couple lived adventurously in San Diego, California, USA, making lots of happy memories. By this time, all three children were grown, married, and living in Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Florida. They were all concerned about how challenging it had become for her to get around. For five years, they encouraged her and Randy to move closer to family. In 2011, the couple eventually moved to Florida where her daughter, Tami Florin, a registered nurse, and Tami’s husband, Dr. Jorge Florin, a surgeon, are involved in managing her health care. As of the date of this publication, the couple still lives together in Florida.
This venture into writing for publication attests to Mary Ellen’s strength and ability to rise above adverse life events, namely the unfortunate accidents which had the potential to paralyze her aspirations and dreams. She lives with the full assurance that God has kept her through all the circumstances of her life and will continue to do so until her purpose on the earth is fulfilled.
