About the Author

Born in Swindon, England, Jo Anne Bowers was bitten by the writing bug at a very early age. Almost as far back as she can remember, she has wanted to write children’s books. Ms. Bowers wants her books to encourage children to be responsible, believe in themselves, and do the right thing. Ms. Bowers holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. CHAPTER 1

I am known As a West Indian manatee. The warm waters of Florida Are home to me.

A calf is a baby manatee. That is how scientists refer to me. I'll stay with my parents for Two years or three, And then an adult is what I'll be.

I move my body Like a small submarine, Floating through rivers, lakes, And streams.

Freshwater or saltwater, It doesn't matter to me. A protected environment Is all that I need.

I swim to the surface To breathe in air. I fill my lungs And then exhale.

I am a gentle creature With lovely, unique features. The elephant is my kin. We both have wrinkled skin.
