Description: This is a short book on neurological emergencies that are typically seen in the emergency department.
Purpose: It is intended to help inform neurologists and other neurology-trained providers about the approach to neuroemergencies in the emergency department. While there are books intended for emergency physicians, this one focuses on neurology providers and attempts to provide insights and perspectives from an emergency medicine standpoint. It attempts to help these providers navigate the complexities of patient care prior to arrival to the inpatient setting.
Audience: The book clearly states that it is intended for neurologists, neurointensivists, and trainees in these fields. The author, the chair of the division of critical care neurology at a large tertiary care center, is an authority in the field.
Features: The book covers a wide variety of topics, from truly critical unresponsive patients to traumatic brain/spinal cord injuries to patients with complaints of pain, dizziness, and headache. A nice feature of the book is its discussion of more nebulous topics such as prehospital care, triage, and provider communication. Particularly useful is a summary section with key bullet points at the end of each chapter.
Assessment: The greatest strength of this book is that it gives a true emergency medicine perspective to providers who are not emergency medicine physicians. At the same time, it is a useful summary of neurological emergencies for any provider caring for these patients in the emergency department.
