About the Author

Hello, my name is Justin Mattock, and I am the author of this book. I wanted to create something that was easy to understand for parents, children, and adults who are starting out in ice hockey. Although this is not an exhaustive guide, it should provide the reader with a basic understanding of how to begin playing ice hockey and how to improve at the sport.

My journey in ice hockey started when I was 8 years old. My father had gotten tickets to see the Los Angeles Kings play against the New Jersey Devils. Initially, I cringed at the idea of attending such an event, but once there, I found myself in awe of the sport. Watching the players move so fast and pass to each other was mesmerizing. After that night, I was determined to start playing hockey. Living in Southern California, where ice hockey equipment was rare (surfboards were common, but hockey sticks were unheard of), I resorted to gluing PVC pipes together with wood to create my first hockey stick.

Since SoCal had limited access to ice, my early hockey experiences were with street hockey. Veriflex introduced rollerblades, which were a significant upgrade from quad skates. Eventually, hockey gained popularity in California, thanks to Wayne Gretzky, who inspired a spectacle that led to the creation of ice rinks and leagues throughout the region. I joined the in-house leagues and spent the next 20 years playing in various leagues, eventually reaching Canada, where I played for the Junior Canucks in Calgary and later in Albuquerque.

However, as I reached a certain age, I realized the need to support myself, which brought my competitive hockey career to a halt. I needed employment to survive, but I discovered my favorite type of ice hockey—stick time. During stick time, a player can go out on the ice and practice whatever they feel they need to work on. Playing competitively is a unique experience that requires a lot of determination. If you are mentally built for it, you will excel. For me, just being out on the ice or outdoors is where my heart is.

I hope you find the information in this book helpful in your ice hockey journey. Whether you aspire to play competitively or simply enjoy the sport, this guide aims to provide you with the foundation you need to get started and improve. Enjoy your time on the ice!
