I KNEW A FELLOW WHO WAS SIX FEET HIGH
This book was written by noted mystery writer, Charlotte Armstrong (1905 - 1969), shortly after the death in 1955 of her father, Frank Hall Armstrong, as a tribute to his memory. It languished as an unpublished manuscript until the folks in her home town of Vulcan, Michigan and neighboring Norway, sponsored a weekend in Ms. Armstrong' s honor, the Charlotte Armstrong Festival, in October 2008.
This is more than a biography of a man. It is a detailed history of the area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the early 20t h century with particular emphasis on a major activity – mining. Armstrong was Chief Engineer of the mine in Vulcan and brought many innovations to the industry which later gave rise to his inventions of coal breaking equipment that provide d significant improvements in safety.
The book also serves as Ms. Armstrong's autobiography as it traces her development from childhood to her successful career as a renowned mystery writer while fulfilling her duties as wife, mot her and grandmother as well as her family's transition from suburban New York to Southern California where she enjoyed her greatest success as a writer.
Ms. Armstrong's powers of observation with attention to detail were never better present ed than in this very personal history
