Un giovane gentiluomo del Sussex di nome John Openshaw arriva nell’ufficio di Sherlock Holmes con una strana storia. Quando John aveva dodici anni, suo zio Elias lo aveva accolto nella sua tenuta dopo essere tornato dall’America. Tuttavia, c’erano alcune stranezze nella casa; una era che, sebbene John potesse andare ovunque in casa, non aveva mai potuto entrare in una stanza chiusa a chiave contenente i bauli di suo zio. Un’altra particolarità fu che nel marzo del 1883 una busta con il timbro postale di Pondicherry, in India, arrivò per il colonnello con la sola firma “K. K. K.”, e cinque semi d’arancia all’interno.
