This is a comprehensive compilation of the most recent advances in understanding human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and in particular, the new understanding of its role as a major cancer-causing agent. It is a volume in the CRC series in dermatology. The author intends this fine collection of studies in HPV to be the bible of the new science of papilloma virology. This is an important addition to the literature, given the rapidly increasing role of HPV as a factor in sexually transmitted disease and carcinogenesis. It generally succeeds in providing the reader with an excellent overview of the advances in HPV study. The book is primarily written for dermatologists, venereologists, oncologists, and gynecologists. The book includes numerous black-and-white photographs, tables, and illustrations. References are current and very pertinent for the field. In fact, the authors are world renowned in the study of HPV and its pathologic effects. It may be considered unusual to have a text concentrating on one viral infection other than HIV, but the HPV infection is perhaps the most common persistent viral infection in the world. In addition, it has only recently been discovered to be a major factor in the rapid rise of cervical dysplasia and carcinoma, and is implicated as the cause of squamous cell carcinomas of various skin and mucous membrane areas. Thus, this book is an excellent addition as a reference on HPV epidemiology and oncogenesis.
