Overview

America, not to mention many other countries, are not as welcoming to churches as in the past. Other countries are absolutely hostile to churches. House churches or as I prefer to call them, house get-together's of Christians meeting with Jesus, are the prototype New Testament model of the church. In fact, the word "church" is a bad translation of the original Greek word found in Scripture. It should be translated "fellowship" or "assembly" or "get-together."

In California where I reside, the cities, counties, and state want the taxes that churches are currently exempt from paying. The day will come when churches will have to pay taxes. Churches might already be finding it difficult to pass muster to buy property to build because of this issue. The solution will be a church in a house, in a rented hall, outside under a tree, or down by the riverside.

This book briefly highlights the considerations a church starter would need to take into consider when starting a church in a house. It discusses the stress it brings on the hosts of the church in a house as well as the issue it may generate with the neighbors. It discusses the issue of giving legal tax deductions to those who make charitable contributions to a house church. It also suggests some fundamental doctrines and practices of any fellowship of believers.

I hope you enjoy reading this short and hopefully helpful book about how to start a church in a house.

About the Author

Robert D. Lewis (Bob) spent his early years as a youth minister, a youth evangelist, and a pastor. It was here that his study of Scripture and church administration took on serious dimensions. He also learned firsthand about the reality of church conflict.

Later in life, Lewis served as an executive director of an association of Baptist churches in the Greater Sacramento, CA, Area. Here he served as a denominational liaison, a church consultant, and a mediator of church conflicts and disputes.

One of his most helpful experiences was a season of communication training with Dr. John S. Savage, the founder and president of L.E.A.D. Consultants, Inc., for 25 years, and currently a senior consultant/trainer for the Kilgore Group. Lewis spent 200 hours in workshops with Dr. Savage and his associates studying listening skills, such as story listening, body language, and neurolinguistic programming theory and techniques. As an ordained minister, Lewis learned the importance of listening, the power of a question, and the power of effective public speaking.

Lewis has always been interested in writing. He wrote a monthly op. ed. piece for the Sacramento Association of Baptist Churches for 18 years plus other articles for publications. In 2013 he co-authored Book #2 in the Little Big Book Series published by CRC Press of the Taylor & Francis Group. It is a business book targeting companies involved in Quality Management using high performance teams. It is also helpful for those wanting an introduction to personal communication theory and techniques. The title is Closing the Communication Gap: An Effective Method for Achieving Desired Results.

Lewis' second book is entitled Barnacle Busters: Keeping Your Church Seaworthy. It is distributed by Smashwords.com.

Lewis is married to Deborah and they have 3 children and 5 grandchildren.
