Overview

Just when American society needs it most, Phil Robbins has reintroduced
How to Make Better Grades as an e-book featuring the
Question System that he developed at Drake University to solve
some of our most pressing education problems. These include high
school graduates failing college placement exams in reading, writing
and math resulting in them being assigned to expensive remedial
courses for which they get no credit. Others enroll but struggle
academically and finally drop out leaving huge student loan debts
for themselves and their parents.

The Question System is a specific procedure that involves turning
all of the information in a textbook or other source material into a
series of questions to which the student learns the answers and
reviews them. The key is that it is relatively easy to learn specific
answers to specific questions compared to trying to remember
printed text, written notes, highlighted or underlined excerpts, or
written summaries. The Question System also is comprehensive and
detailed. And the student always knows what he has not learned or
has forgotten, so the student does not waste time and effort
relearning or overlearning what he already knows.

The Question System solves the problem of learning and retaining
content, but reading and writing skills are also important in making
grades and success after graduation. This book addresses these two
skills in separate chapters. The one on writing is solely unique with
hyperlinks to two lists: one of transitional expressions used by bestselling
authors and the other list of over 220 sentence beginnings
and expressions used by renowned academic writers—college
presidents, faculty experts, and academic journalists. Otherwise,
these linguistic patterns can only be picked up by years of
association with the people who possess them—if ever.

The last chapter "Looking to the Future" addresses some of the
ubiquitous problems facing American education, both financial and
educational. Although they affect the student, they can only be
solved by the people who make management decisions inside and
outside the education establishment. In many cases it is not a matter
of money but of doing things differently.
