Overview

According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, the seven year itch refers to the desire for new sexual experience that is thought to be felt after about seven years of marriage. It can also mean a supposed tendency to infidelity after about seven years of marriage. It is a psychological term to suggest that happiness in a relationship declines after around year seven of a marriage. It is also used to mean an inclination to become unfaithful after seven years of marriage.
According to Kierman K. (1999), Cohabitation in Western Europe, Population Trends, 96:25-32, most married couples experience a gradual decline in the quality of their marriages after the ‘Honeymoon’ months and in the most recent years, around the fourth year of marriage. Around the seventh year of marriage, tensions rise to a point that couples either divorce or adapt to their partner.
According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Services, Duration of Marriage Before Divorce, United States, the median duration of marriage at the time of decree was seven years from 1867- 1977. The National Divorce rate increased. States with high divorce rates generally had short median duration to divorce, and vice versa.
According to the US Department of Commerce, Economics, and Statistics Administration, US CENSUS BUREAU; Numbers, Timing, and Duration of Marriages and Divorces, 2009 Household Economic Studies, the duration of terminated marriages and median time to remarriage following divorce indicated that first marriages which ended in divorce lasted a median of 8 years for men and women overall. The median time from marriage to separation was shorter-about seven years. The median duration of time between the divorce from a first marriage and a second marriage was four years. It is suffice to note that the median duration of second marriages that ended in divorce did not differ from that for first marriages. See Table 8 of the Report.
