Overview

This book presents a creative, exciting and empowering approach that will take you on an intriguing journey to pique your interest and prepare you for an education and career in the women’s and men’s fashion industry. Like an artist’s palette, it will guide you through the spectrum of fashion design, merchandizing and manufacturing from conception to point of sale. It explains dressing men, women, and children and the textiles necessary to do it all.
The rationale and direction of the book will offer the multi-varied careers available in today’s global market in designing or merchandising. lt shows how the industry has reached global proportions and illustrates the importance of foreign markets. Curiosity will undoubtedly be piqued by my musings of encounters with some of the fashion world’s best – from Chanel to Calvin Klein.
There are twenty-four chapters. It is said brevity is the soul of wit, so I hope to amuse and not bore while imparting some wisdom. Photos are included as well as illustrations devoted to enhancing and guiding future designers and merchandisers in their curriculum or career. It covers wholesale and retail and every phase of design from conception to completion. The importance of color, as well as design and necessity of accessorizing one’s collection are explained.
Every phase of the men’s wear industry from ties to shoes and everything in women’s wear from head to toe is covered. It illustrates textiles from the primary market’s raw materials to fabric weaving and textile printing. It illustrates how the menswear industry is burgeoning at a similar rate to women’s wear’s scope in the vitality of this century.
Today’s globalization shows the potential needs required for the marketplace given the new worldwide expansion of many firms in buying, selling, and creating jobs that never before existed.
Using this book will establish a foundation for learning and philosophical approaches to the field of fashion design, or merchandising and marketing. Marketing is a useful tool to the designer. Design and creative ideas should also be of useful interest to the merchandiser because many merchandisers eventually assume the position of creative director. It depicts the designer as the catalyst for any business promoting fashion. However, the merchandiser can also be a catalyst depending on the structure of the business firm with which they are associated.
Learning and creativity go hand in hand, whether directly or indirectly related to your job. More young designers than ever are recognized for their talents and worldwide interest in fashion and style.
Understanding creativity and the characteristics that form a concept of a fashion collection are extremely important. Courses like language or mathematics may not be directly related to designing or merchandising men’s or women’s wear, but can be useful in improving one’s craft in the industry as a whole.
Creative design fields may seem frivolous and silly to some, but they are serious business. The fashion concept doesn’t just happen. There is a sense of order and structure that reflects the globalized world around us and one’s awareness is important. For instance, men’s wear has an inherent conservatism associated with being successful in the corporate world, whereas women have always understood what high style is about and how to apply it. However, the world is changing therefore, it is necessary to realize that everything in life today applies the word “creative” or “fashionable” or “inventive” to it and has become common usage in everything we do.
Other eras will be used to illustrate the progression from the past to draw upon.
The fashion world is a lucrative industry that is wide open to talent and foresight. Ideas do not come to fruition by themselves. They are helped by the tools and knowledge of the trade or craft or industry you are entering, as well as the people with whom you associate. Your education now will mean success or failure in future endeavors. If you give it your best and utilize and digest everything, you are sure to maximize your potential and become the hottest in your field.
So onward and upward !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About the Author

Robert Schafer, an award-winning men’s and women’s fashion designer and an expert at merchandising his own ideas, was born in New York and educated at New York University and the Fashion Institute of Technology. He’s had over 40 years in the fashion and textile fields and designed and manufactured for such recognized labels as Oleg Cassini, Nina Ricci, Pierre Cardin, Pauline Trigere and Schiaparelli.
He made an indelible mark in the fashion industry, guided by his belief that the designer is the business catalyst for success, garnering the Caswell-Massey Award, the Coty Fashion Award (now the CFDA) and the Tommy Award of the American Print Council. During his tenure at Burma Bibas, he served as vice president for design and production and later a partner in the firm. He joined Hart Marx where he designed the Nino Cerutti Collection. Schafer was 19 when he began his long career. He has currently finished the first of several books – this one titled, How to Fashion Your Future . His goal is to provide this comprehensive guide to prepares young designers and merchandisers for a successful career in the multifaceted world of fashion.
His credo to thrive in business is, we must be creative because business is a creative activity.
While his name was not always on the label, his designs, choice of textiles and overall influence was felt in all phases of the fashion industry – from clothing to accessories and from women’s to men’s wear – even into interior design. In the men’s wear field, an arena which Schafer once dominated, he had more front pages featuring his designs on fashion periodicals – GQ is just one example – than most any other designers.
Schafer has traveled the globe creating jobs for thousands, establishing factories in various European and Asian countries and mastering three additional languages. Since leaving the day-to-day challenges in the fashion world, Schafer has moved to Miami where he added real estate mogul to his list of accomplishments. However, when opportunity arises, he dons his fashion hat – like the men’s and women’s bodywear designs he developed for Softouch, Inc., Miami.
Most recently he was invited to China by Fujian K-Boxing Warpknitting, Inc., a high-tech company of knitted fabrics.
All this is what creates an excitement for his book, a roadmap to success.
