About the Author

Deahn Berrini aims to give voice to those not backed by education, connections or luck. Her first novel, Milkweed, which looks at post-traumatic stress disorder in returning vets from the family’s point of view, was extensively researched, and praised by Richard Currey, author of the classic Fatal Light, and by the Vietnam Veterans of America’s The VWA Veteran. She writes for her local newspaper and teaches writing. A graduate of Brown University with a degree in History and an alum of Boston College Law School, she lives north of Boston with her family and is at always at work on her next novel.

"How to Earn Your Keep" is a beautifully written novel. The carefully crafted prose is a pleasure to read, understated and elegant. But what sets the book apart is how deeply moving it is. I quickly found myself truly caring about each of the characters, and I became completely invested in their story. I won’t give the ending away, but it is beautiful and touched with grace—and I might have had a little trouble reading the last paragraph through my tears.
