Thirteen-year-old Britt Babbin, the scariest kid around, terrorizes his neighborhood on Hob Street. Even the school bully stays clear of him. He takes pleasure in putting fear in others, wearing hideous masks and playing practical jokes. But Britt has one problem: he cannot scare his older brother, Todd. No matter how hard Britt tries, Todd is always one step ahead. However, everything changes when Britt orders a device, guaranteed to scare Todd, from a horror shop called Frapples’ Hall of Frights. When a box arrives at Britt’s house, Jake, a gruesome monster, explodes from its cardboard packaging. Jake pledges his allegiance to Britt, promising to frighten Todd out of his mind. But Jake overstays his welcome, wanting only to have Britt as a sidekick in his mission to spread terror. Slowly, in the same manner as someone catching a flu, Britt begins taking on certain characteristics and the appearance of a monster the more he is around Jake. Britt’s subsequent journey with Jake proves to be more of a monstrous test than mere fun.
