Description: This book was created to improve the care of patients with chronic pain admitted to the hospital either because of pain or with other health conditions, recognizing that these patients are vulnerable to under- or overtreatment of pain. The book begins with an explanation of the basic science of acute and chronic pain. It then covers various disease states associated with pain and concludes with the pharmacology of medications typically encountered in the management of these patients.
Purpose: The book is intended to serve as a manual for the care of hospitalized chronic pain patients. While this objective is worthy, the book falls short of meeting it. The material in the book is too simple and may be useful to medical students. While intended for all practitioners, the simplistic approach limits its use.
Audience: The book is intended for practitioners who care for patients with chronic pain who require hospitalization. Given the simplistic approach, the book may be useful only for students. The problem for students is that the information is not as comprehensive as necessary for individuals with limited knowledge. As such, the book has a limited audience. The authors are experts in the management of pain and have made every attempt to write for individuals without their level of expertise.
Features: The book is organized into three sections: 1) the basic science of pain, 2) common pain states in patients that will require hospitalization, and 3) the pharmacology. While the organization of the book makes sense, the writing style is not similar among the chapters, which makes the book difficult to read. Some chapters begin with key points while others do not. The brevity in each chapter is intended to make it more of a manual and yet the information is too brief. Finally, the pain conditions are presented as cases and yet do not begin with a patient history. These patient cases were most likely deleted after the chapter was written as the chapters frequently refer to a patient. All of these aspects limit the usefulness of the book.
Assessment: This book is one of the only ones addressing patients with chronic pain who require hospital admission. Its approach and lack of consistency among the chapters decrease the book's usefulness and limit its audience.
